You Can't Beat Black Rugs For That Sophisticated Look
Looking round my living room the other day, I was struck by how shabby it was beginning to look. I pride myself that my house always looks up to date and sophisticated, but somehow it was losing its glamour. I was beginning to feel embarrassed to invite friends and acquaintances round. Something had to be done and fairly quickly. However at this time of year, I don't have a lot of spare money in my bank account, so any new look I had would have to be reasonable inexpensive. Then I came up with the idea of adding some black rugs to give sophistication to my tired looking furnishings. Something to catch the eye and provide a focal point away from the rest of the room. Black rugs provide the perfect solution.
So my next choice problem was to choose the perfect type of black rugs for my decor. The colour wasn't a problem, but whether to go for patterned or plain was. I was struck by the black rugs which were one colour. Simple in design and available in any size, I felt that they looked right in my living room. There were also different textures of black rugs to choose from. I could have a black rug with a long pile or a short pile, each giving a different effect. Although black is a basic colour, there are also subtle variations in the shade. I could choose from a deep rich black to a lighter variation which almost bordered on the grey. Basically, when deciding on the perfect black rug, I was spoilt for choice.
The patterned black rugs gave me pause for thought. Would one of these give the sophisticated effect I was after? Should I choose a black rug with a motif in red? There are some stunning black rug designs available ranging from traditional to modern and even including some with fantastic pictures on. Also the red decoration would add extra interest to an otherwise plain black rug. I could also have a similar pattern in blue. Grey on black provides some interesting choices too. I was beginning to be spoilt for choice. Black rugs with a white pattern were tempting also, as they provided a dramatic contrast and certainly would have caught the eye in my living room. I had to sit down and think carefully about my black rug choices.
I took careful note of the decor in my living room. The curtains and soft furnishings are red based, and the floor is laminated. The curtains have a pattern on them and this is echoed in the cushions, so both curtains and cushions match. There are various pictures on the wall, and some china ornaments around the room. I also have a collection of family photographs. Because of the numerous patterns around the room, I would have to be careful in any patterned black rug I chose. In the end, I went for plain and simple. I chose a pair of black rugs, one very large one for the centre of the room and a smaller black rug which sits in front of the fireplace. They have improved the look of my living room immensely, giving it that sophisticated touch that it needed.

i need help with colours and accessories for my home.?
we have a single story 3 bedroom house. we like earthy colours, but maybe with a dash of brightness here and there. so far our choices have been mostly incongruous and our curtains are weird as is our sofa, since we can't figure out how to get the "dash" of brightness. anyhow, our walls are off-white, so taking it from there, we need help with curtains, cushions, bedcovers, tableclothes rugs and accessories. should i do the whole house in two colours? would it look weird if i did each room in a different colour? what about prints or flat colours? (yes we are quite at sea!)
You should not do the whole house in two colors - you'd get sick of it very quickly. You also shouldn't do every room in different colors, especially if the house is fairly open. Try to incorporate some of the same colors throughout the house, or use slightly different shades in the same color families. Mix them with other colors to individualize the rooms.
Paint is the easiest way to add color, and the least expensive. It is a bit more labor intensive, of course. Don't leave the walls white. No matter what you do with the rest of the furnishings, it will still look unfinished. Imagine a still life painting - the subject may be a bowl of fruit, but it doesn't just float on a stark white background. There is color in the background to enhance the picture. The same should be true of your home.
Choosing color is a challenge for a lot of people. I recommend going to a craft store and getting an inexpensive color wheel (you can pick them up for just a couple bucks). It helps a lot to understand how colors work together. For example, green and red are opposites on the color wheel, and are called complementary colors. The same is true of blue and orange, and purple and yellow. This is one way of getting that "dash" you were talking about. You can take it a bit further and use a couple of colors that are next to one another on the color wheel (for example, red, red-orange, and orange) and adding a color that is directly opposite one of those (like purple). Use the accent color sparingly, though.
Now bring it back to colors you might actually use in your house. You like earthy colors, so sage green, warm cream, chocolate brown and spicy rusts would all go together nicely. The rust and sage are like the red and green on the color wheel - complementary. The brown and cream mellow out the color so it isn't too overwhelming. You can add a punch of color with a deep plum for contrast. Keep in mind the proportions of the colors. You do not want to have equal amounts of each color - that would be confusing to the eye. Try a ratio of 60-25-10-5, for example. This isn't a hard and fast rule, just a guideline.
Finally, to check out color combinations, go to the Behr paint website and use their ColorSmart system. You'll need Macromedia Flash Player, but it has an inspiration section that can give you color palettes. You can also choose colors on your own to see how they work.
