Learn about History of Kerman before You Take a Trip to Iran
History of Kerman can be traced back to its establishment as a defense outpost by Ardeshir I in the 3rd century. He was the first ruler of the Sassanid dynasty and called this defense outpost by the name of Behdesir. This place was passed on to the Muslim rulers in 642 following the battle of Nahavand. But, the Zoroastrians and the Kharijites still lived in this city till 698.
After that, the population was totally Muslim by the year 725. During this time, the town became well known for some textiles including cashmere wool shawls. Learning about all this before your trip to Iran will increase your curiosity for the country.
Naming of the City
You will learn from the history of Kerman that the Abbasid Caliphate did not have a strong influence over this region. Consequently, the Buyid dynasty seized power in the tenth century and continued to rule in spite of the region being attacked by Mahmud of Ghazna in the latter part of the 10th century. The city got the name of Kerman sometime during this period. The 11th and 12th centuries saw the town under the rule of the Seljuk Turks who also annexed Oman and Fars.
Trade Center
It is possible to know more about the history of Kerman from Marco Polo's accounts who came to this city in 1271. There is information that it became a major trade center which connected the Persian Gulf with Central Asia and Khorasan. But after that, the town was ransacked by many foreign invaders. It again came into prominence under the Safavid dynasty. Trade improved with rugs and carpets being exported to the European countries of Germany and England during this time.
Fall and Rise
History of Kerman tells you that the city was conquered by Lotf Ali Khan in 1794 after he overcame the Qajars in 1793. In turn, he was attacked and made captive for six months in this town by Agha Mohammad Khan. You will learn on your trip to Iran that during this time, all the male in the place were killed or made blind by his order as the people in Kerman helped Lotf Ali Khan escape the town before his arrival.
All the children and women were forced into slavery and it took just 90 days for the entire city to be destroyed. It was in the 19th century that Kerman was again re-established and normalcy returned in the 20th century. Today it is becoming one of the major industrialized cities of Iran.
