Antique Sultanabad Rugs – A Valuable Investment
Antique Sultanabad rugs are just what you need in order to liven up your home and add a touch of luxury to it. Of course, you might say that they don't come cheap, but some things in life are worth it. Just eat out a little less and you'll find you'll have enough cash saved up, at the end of the year, to buy an Antique Sultanabad carpet!
Yup, that's right, an Antique Sultanabad carpet is expensive, but within reach and the best part about it is that, since these rugs are made almost exclusively for us Westerners, you will find that they will appeal to your sensibilities as well. Although the techniques used to make them and the designs may be wholly Persian, the colours used are subdued which fits in with the décor of most of our homes.
Where It All Began
Sultanabad, in Iran, is where all the action is. Moreover, since the embargo has been lifted, these rugs can be legally imported from the region and one can thus acquire them now in a hassle free manner.
Initially, all rugs and carpets in the 19th century were made with natural dyes, with the prominent colours being dark red, green, blue, ivory and gold. But now, one can even custom design a Sultanabad rug according to their tastes and preferences. With the advent of artificial dyes of course, all this has changed.
Colours And Styles
Rugs originally featured bold, floral designs and they were spacious and patterned exquisitely. Now, a wide range of sizes are available to suit your requirements and more importantly, to suit the décor of your apartment.
In the olden days, these rugs were crafted from wool, in fact the wool came from the sheep which belonged to the weaver himself. The rugs are woven, using asymmetrical Turkish knots to tie every loop one by one.
Apart from using wide and bold borders, the designs feature small, repeating motifs which are intricately and delicately crafted. More often, than not, these patterns are floral and also all-over, large scale lattice vine type patterns. Sultanabad merchants and weavers went on to simplify these designs to make them more subdued, as a result, foreign companies and locals adopted a similar style and system, making the Sultanabad carpets very popular. These carpets now have the highest decorative value.
One can attribute the popularity and emergence of the Sultanabad rug to the British company, Ziegler and Co., which, in 1883, established a workshop for making Persian carpets in the area of Sultanabad in Iran. This workshop was situated in Arak and Ziegler and Co. had in their employ, designers from western department stores to suitably modify the carpets, so as to appeal to Western tastes. Since then, there has been no looking back for these hugely popular rugs.
